    We need your help. As you already know, the Department of Dance and Movement is responsible for selling about 40 tickets to the benefit performance of Thoroughly Modern Millie on September 24. This gala event is the kick-off to DSA’s 20th anniversary celebration, and an important school wide fundraising effort. Your participation, buying tickets and attending the event or selling tickets, is critical for the evening to be successful. Please contact Kim Daniels for tickets or additional information.

    Tomorrow, September 2, is Back to School Night at DSA. Schedules will be available at 5:20 p.m., there will be a sneak peak of Thoroughly Modern Millie in the Schomp Theatre at 5:30, and classroom visits will begin at 6:00.

    Please join us for our first DFO Meeting this year on September 14 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Room D102.

    Did you know that Denver School of the Arts is upon its 20th Anniversary?

    There will be special programming throughout the school year honoring this milestone, and a lot of energy and enthusiasm placed into planning for the future. Principal Kohut, the Friends of DSA, and the DSA PTSO are proud to announce the:

    Vision 20/20 Campaign:
    Celebrating the first 20 years;
    Creating a foundation for the next 20 years

    This campaign includes a fundraising component designed to build a capital fund to support initiatives that carry the school forward the next two decades and on.

    Thoroughly Modern Millie

    Kicking off this campaign will be a benefit performance of Thoroughly Modern Millie, and the Vision 20/20 Gala on Friday, September 24. This special event will include a presentation of the Vision 20/20 Campaign by Principal Kohut, additional exhibits and performances by DSA students throughout the evening, and an elegant after-show reception with more DSA student entertainment.

    We need your help. Tickets for the event are $75 ($55 is tax deductible) and seating for the show is general admission. Each DSA department will be selling a proportional number of tickets to fill the Kay Schomp Theatre this night, and the Department of Dance and Movement is responsible for about 40 tickets. Anyone is welcome, especially arts patrons and philanthropists who may be interested in supporting DSA. If you, or your family, friends, neighbors, or coworkers could join us on this important evening, please contact Kim Daniels (using the form below)—she has tickets available for you, as well as credit card forms.

    Having a full house to begin this year long celebration is the goal of the Gala Committee, but recognizing there are plenty of people interested in supporting DSA unable to attend on the 24th, there are additional “no-show tickets” available for a suggested $75 tax deductible donation. Without reserving a seat, patrons are still able to contribute to the Vision 20/20 Campaign kick-off. Please encourage your contacts to support DSA for the evening, even if they are unable to attend. These “no-show tickets” are also available through Kim Daniels.

    DSA was able to negotiate limited royalties for a single performance of the show, which means that all proceeds beyond normal ticket prices this night directly fund DSA programs and campaigns.

    Additional information about the Vision 20/20 Campaign will be available in the coming days and weeks.

    It is not often that Denver School of the Arts Dance Department goes on a trip across the country, but when it does, it represents Denver extremely well. Twenty students from DSA’s advanced dance class were chosen to attend the National High School Dance Festival in Miami from March 19-23, 2010. Each student received a personalized schedule for the classes they were to attend those four days. The teachers of these classes were teachers like ours (Michael O’Banion and Alicia Karczewski). It was great to see the type of training that other performing arts high schools have. The classes offered were ballet, modern, jazz, yoga, body alignment, mens technique. As I took these classes I realized that the dance program at Denver School of the Arts is very rigorous and extremely respectable. It teaches much of the artistic and technical aspects of the dance world.

    The twenty students had enormous fun together. When we weren’t dancing we were watching performances or walking. Friday and Saturday night held two performances each. The earlier performance was the student choreography showcase. The second performance was the gala, where other schools showed their own guest choreography. Many of these dances were absolutely gorgeous! Every dance was so pristinely clean and polished. Each dancer was flawless. Again the styles of these dances varied from ballet to jazz to hip hop to modern.

    Our trip to Miami was such a memorable one. Ms. K and Mr. O and Jolie Noguchi were amazing at shepherding us around downtown Miami—twenty gabbing teenagers. Kudos! This experience was so wonderful, hopefully DSA’s dancers return to the Festival every year. —Seth Ives, Class of 2010

    DSA Advanced Dancers are attending the 20th anniversary of the National High School Dance Festival, March 18 through March 21, 2010 at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, FL. The Festival is presented by the NHSDF organization in conjunction with New World School of the Arts and Artists Exchange International. The four-day Festival will welcome over 1,500 students in grades 9-12 representing their high school.

    The Festival is four days of sharing, learning, performing and dancing with friends and colleagues from across the nation as well as abroad. Along with exciting Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the Festival will feature six Adjudicated Concerts (two evening Gala concerts, two late afternoon Showcase concerts and two mid-day informal concerts). The first Showcase Concert will feature student choreography, where a Festival committee will honor the weekend’s most talented student(s) with the Outstanding Student Choreography Award.
